ARTISTS on ARTISTS: Shuyler Jansen
Shuyler Jansen moved to Saskatoon a number of years ago and has been blowing away the local alt-country scene ever since.
Before that, his band Old Reliable was a mainstay of the Edmonton scene. He has toured nationally and internationally countless times with Old Reliable, The Deep Dark Woods and as a solo artist. Jansen talked with the Sheaf about the highly influential American band the Pixies ”” their influence during their own time and in current music trends, mainstream and underground.

A night of spontaneous head-banging
Thrash, black metal, death metal, heavy metal, power metal ”” whatever you call it, it rocks, and Children of Bodom are kings of the genre. Children of Bodom had their first headlining show in Saskatoon on Oct. 1 at the Odeon.

Weird Canada promotes experimental and boundary pushing music
Lately, CBC Radio 3 and Exclaim! Magazine are championing a bunch of bands that ”” for the most part ”” I find dull and homogenous. Recently, however, I discovered Aaron Levin’s blog Weird Canada, a site with reviews and streamed sample tracks.

Left of Zero blames the gun
The music contained Left of Zero’s latest album is uniformly beautiful, accessible and lush. Three tracks long, it creates an appropriate introduction piece for new listeners to the Toronto band.

Freaks and Geeks: a cult sensation
High school is one of the most trying milestones in a person’s life. Throw a few hundred adolescents into one building and you have a prime example of survival of the fittest. No television show depicts this hellish milestone quite as accurately as Freaks and Geeks, the short-lived NBC series produced by Judd Apatow.

Advice to the dirty texter
The most important item to remember is that dirty talk is adventurous and fun; don’t take anything said seriously.
