Mr Burton,

I came late to this, but I wanted to compliment you on a great piece of journalism. Why can't all reporters do what you have here- engage with theory but see how it plays out on the ground.

I agree with you that Kaoma has simplified and reduced the AHB to a question of imported homophobia from the West. At the same time, I wish you had questioned the role of fundamentalist religion - Islam and Christianity - on making this bill. I think it's significant that Bahati quoted Scott Lively and Richard Cohen verbatim during the first Parliamentary reading of the bill. Could we say that these antigay Christian Right leaders at least provided a philosophical language to denigrate homosexuality in religious and secular terms? (Lively talks about homosexuality as a physical illness more than a sin against god.) I'd be interested in discussing this more with you.

Barack Obama needs to do somethin about this. All hes worrying about is health care plans. He needs to more like fixing genocide starting in one perticular area like uganda or rwanda.

lejos del usa that was the stupidest thing I've read all day. Everyone knows that Anti-Homosexuality is a western Christian ideal that's been imposed onto Uganda hundreds of years ago. The Ugandan is hypocritical in thinking that they are trying to maintain Ugandan tradition as they are in actuality succumbing to Western neocolonialism and looking like fools in doing so. Think twice before you speak and don't throw your dogmatic christian bullshit around without backing it up with at least a shred of logic. No one wants to hear that,

I dont understand all this cultural stuff. I am an anthropology student and it seems I have more of an understanding of Ugandan and African history then their own leader. Homosexuality was tolerated and in many cases viewed as a hjgher place in most of pre-colonial Africa. Anti-homosexualty was actually the western ideal. So. If the Uganadan president wants to be "traditional" then he is actually doing the wrong thing. Plus murder is never good and is against the 10 commandments which is what really confuses me to begin with. God created all in his image including homosexuals. Ergo God created homosexuals to give the devil a larger army? doesn't make sense does it?
